The main content of this presentation is to help audiences plan and design an effective Chinese language program as a second language for young learners, or improve current Chinese language programs with new materials and methods. In order to help young learners acquire the language with enthusiasm, this presentation will show audiences different ways to reinforce proactive learning of the Chinese language. The presentation will also demonstrate how to use Chinese language as an introduction to Chinese/Asian cultures for schools’ world culture curriculum. Just like Latin is the root of many Romance languages, Chinese is the root of many Asian languages. Attendees will learn how to use Chinese language to explain cultural differences to their students to gain global perspectives. Last but not least, the presentation will also introduce a new way to utilize Chinese logographic writing symbols for children’s visual discrimination and spatial perception stimulation based on research done at the University of Cyprus in 2005. The research indicates that “recent neuroimaging studies show that thinking about Chinese characters activates many more brain areas in both the right and the left hemispheres than when thinking about phonetic characters.” The presentation will exhibit new exercises that audiences can use for young children’s cognitive development.
